ECC (short for Error-Correcting Code) memory is a type of memory that includes special circuitry for testing the accuracy of data as it passes in and out of memory. If you install ECC memory together with non-ECC memory in a system, the ECC function of the ECC memory will be turned off by the system (i.e., the ECC memory functions like non-ECC memory). For consumer applications ECC does not make a significant difference. For mission-critical or server applications it does make a difference. I have both kinds of memory (ECC and non-ECC) listed at eBay. They have been tested in a Dell system for several hours. No memory failures occurred. This means that the memory modules are 100% functional. They are at least as reliable as brand new memory (see below). Following proper handling and installation procedures is very important. Therefore I include detailed handling and installation instructions with every Rambus memory module auction. Many computer users seem to think that processor speed is the most important factor in determining 'computing power'. This is only correct as long as there is sufficient real (i.e., physical) memory in your system for all the code and data you are using. However, for many real-life situations this perception is not correct. If you don't have sufficient physical memory (i.e., memory modules) in your system, the operating system will have to resort to 'memory swapping' (moving some memory contents to your hard disk, to make room). This is a very slow operation. Hard disk access times are in the range of 5 to 10 milliseconds, compared to access times of 30 to 50 nanoseconds for physical memory. In a nutshell: As soon as your system has to move some information out to hard disk, access to this information will be around 100,000 times slower than the access to data kept in physical memory. Yes, the factor is around 100,000 (divide the fastest disk access time by the slowest physical memory access time). That is why having sufficient physical memory in your system is very, very important. The processing power of a 50% or 100% faster processor (e.g., a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4) does not do you much good if this fast processor has to wait milliseconds for data to be brought in from hard disk. How much physical memory is currently used by your Windows system? Open the Windows Task Manager to find out: Right-click on an empty area of the Task Bar (at the bottom of your screen) and choose 'Task Manager'. Click on the 'Performance' tab. In the lower left hand corner of the Task Manager window the total amount of physical memory and the available amount is displayed (in kilobytes – 1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte). Right after starting up (or restarting) your system will use relatively little physical memory (i.e., a large portion of your total amount will still be available). However, as your work on the computer progresses (and you use more programs and open more windows), more and more physical memory is used, and the available amount will be reduced accordingly. When the available amount becomes insufficient, the operating system will have to resort to 'memory swapping' (see above). Are used memory modules less reliable than new modules? No, they are not. When you look at failure rates of memory modules, you will discover that the rate is relatively high in the beginning and then levels off over time. That is why experienced system integrators perform a system 'burn-in' (i.e., they test the systems for hours or days before delivering them to their customers). This 'burn-in' catches the failures that occur during the initial high failure rate period and therefore significantly reduces system failures at the customer site. In other words: A used memory module that has seen months or years of 'burn-in' (i.e., use in a system) is most likely more reliable than a brand new memory module. Memory modules have no moving parts that can 'wear out' (the only thing moving in memory modules is electrons, and they don't wear out). Does this mean that new memory modules are unreliable? No, they are certainly not unreliable. It is in the manufacturer's best interest to ship a product that is as reliable as possible. They spend a lot of effort and money on extensive testing. However, they cannot test every memory module produced for hours or days. The number of modules they produce is simply too high to do that. So the best they can do is to refine their manufacturing process and testing to minimize the failure rate of the products they ship. Thank you very much for bidding!
